Google Pixel Watch: the Apple Watch of Android smartphones finally official!

If it was last May that Google revealed the existence of its Pixel Watch, the brand's first connected watch, we had to wait for the "Made by Google" conference which took place yesterday to find out more about this smartwatch that seeks to become the Apple Watch of Android smartphones. It was also an opportunity for us to know the technical characteristics, price and release date of the Google Pixel Watch. Summary.

A design (always) all in curves

The external appearance of the Google Pixel Watch has already been known since last May. So there is no real surprise here, we thus find a particularly stylish connected watch with a round screen protected by a curved Corning Gorilla Glass 5 3D glass. The case is made of recycled stainless steel and the Pixel Watch incorporates a rotating crown that allows interaction with its Wear OS 3 mobile system developed jointly with Samsung.

On the other hand, we know more about its technical characteristics: the case is 41 mm in diameter (12.3 mm high) and light (36 grams, without the bracelet). The AMOLED screen is 1.6 inches in size with a definition of 320 pixels per inch and a maximum brightness of 1000 nits. It offers an always-on function to display the time permanently, like the Apple Watch or the Samsung Galaxy Watch5.

An (almost) high-end smartwatch

On a technical level again, this connected watch integrates an all-in-one chip Exynos 9110 from Samsung, a surprising choice because this chip is already present on the first Galaxy Watches from Korea, supported by a Cortex M33 coprocessor and 2 GB of living memory. To complete the picture, the Google smartwatch has 32 GB of internal storage, Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and an NFC chip for contactless payments. 4G LTE is available as an option.

The Pixel Watch is also loaded with the usual sensors such as a heart rate monitor, an ECG, an accelerometer, a GPS chip, a gyroscope and a sensor for oxygen levels in the blood or SPO2. Note that it is only waterproof to 5 ATM (just like Samsung's Galaxy Watch5 for that matter).

The silicone strap of the smartwatch is easily interchangeable and follows the circular shapes of the case. In terms of autonomy, its 294 mAh battery only allows it to withstand a single day of conventional use (vs 3 for the Galaxy Watch5). The magnetic cable, supplied as standard, fortunately allows a full charge in 1h20 or a quick charge (50% autonomy) in just 30 minutes.

What's new in this Pixel Watch?

In the end, what to remember from Google's first smartwatch?

  • The Pixel Watch is very design and customizable. It is sold with a strap — proprietary — available in two sizes (130-175 mm or 165-210 mm) and in different colors

  • For the first time, it integrates functions from Fitbit (Google acquired Fitbit at the end of 2019): six months of Fitbit Premium are offered (40 training modes, 1,000 different training sessions offered, 400 mindfulness sessions, monitoring of health indicators, etc.)

  • The smartwatch is compatible with all Android 8 and + smartphones. Sorry iPhone owners...

  • Released October 13 for $379 in the Wi-Fi version or $429 in the Wi-Fi + 4G LTE version

  • Three months of YouTube Music Premium is offered with any purchase of the Pixel Watch
